In C#, the compiler rewrites async methods into a state machine. await marks suspension points. The return type (Task, Task<T>) is the handle on in-flight work.

The query still takes however long SQL needs. What changes is that the ASP.NET Core ThreadPool worker is not pinned for the whole duration.
What asynchronous does not mean
Common misconceptions:
- "Async makes code faster" — No. A 200 ms query is still 200 ms. Async improves concurrency under I/O waits.
- "Async always uses more threads" — No for I/O.
